What’s with the multiple pseudonyms? (Heart of an Astronaut, Holistic Hues, Soupscapes)
I have been making Art under “Heart of an Astronaut” since high school. It started as typical teenage “sad girl art”. I made an anonymous MySpace account to secretly share it with the world and got surprisingly good feedback from fellow classmates and strangers across the country. I sold my first illustration at 16 through a MySpace DM from a guy in Liverpool, NY. That was my first realization that there was true value in art making.
Once I entered the Instagram scene around 2011, I realized the many mediums I was smooshing under one account appeared in-cohesive. I also noticed that because I was trying to attract clients through my mural work, that I subconsciously started watering down my personal work to be more digestible to potential clients. It felt like I wasn’t being authentic anymore with my visuals. AND the people who were into my more personal work didn’t seem to be the same people who were interested in my mural work. So I decided to separate my mural painting projects under “Holistic Hues” and create an additional, more professional account to share that particular work. This allowed me to infiltrate the interior design part of instagram and connect with other people interested in Feng Shui and space making who are not necessarily into conceptual art.
After getting my hands on an Ipad to get back into animation, I tried playing with digital collage. But the only successful ones, in my opinion, were related to soup. After all this branding thought about adding Holistic Hues, it felt obvious that “SoupScapes” was also it’s own thing with endless possibilities. The idea was to take pictures of my hands and whatever soup I was eating, and juxtapose it with imagery of the landscapes and skies relevant to the soup or where I was eating it. The addition of this account allowed me to connect with the foodie community and people who enjoy food art.
So basically, “Holistic Hues” and “SoupScapes” are focused projects under the “Heart of an Astronaut” umbrella which is everything that I make. “Holistic Hues” and “SoupScapes” by “Heart of an Astronaut” by Shannon Belock. LoL. Not confusing at all.
